Door canopies have been a feature of British homes since the 18th century when a simple hood would be used over the door to prevent water entering the building. Over the years the construction of canopies developed and by the end of the 19th century canopies constructed from timber lattice work became popular. The Victorian and Edwardian eras saw the arrival of more elaborate designs, such as gables or steep pitched canopies.
